The opening of a new hotel unit in the Lapa neighborhood, last Thursday, will allow the urban reconstruction of the area as the project includes the rehabilitation and expansion of road infrastructure, mainly in the streets of Cervantes and Alves Redol, to be open in the meantime to car circulation, as well as the creation, within a year, of an urban park with 17 thousand square meters, for the benefit of the city and of those who visit it.

The investment of 56 million euros, estimates the creation of 119 direct and 120 indirect jobs. In environmental terms, it will promote the development of an extensive green area, which serves, among other things, as a carbon sink, but also, urbanistically, contributes to the requalification of the Lapa area.

The total 14.500 square meters of land – abandoned – acquired by the Mercan Group, were transferred to the municipality for the park, which, joining other municipal parcels, will offer the city a green space of 17 thousand square meters. To these, other three thousand square meters were added for the streets, which will help mobility in the most central area of Porto.

All of these investments in tourism are according to the municipal strategy within the sector - "Future Vision for the Sustainability of Porto's Destination" - presented at the end of 2022, with its growth going through diversification for those visiting the city and the tourist offer of services and products. This capacity allows Porto to be positioned among the best city destinations in the world, as recognized by the World Travel Awards.

Inauguration Ceremony on April 27th

The inauguration of this hotel unit, one of the most recent investments by the Mercan Group, under the Renaissance brand which belongs to Marriott International, was attended by the Councilor for Tourism and Internationalization, Catarina Santos Cunha, representatives from Porto City Hall and the president of the Regional Tourism Entity of Porto and North of Portugal/Porto Tourism Association (ATP), Luís Pedro Martins, among other guests.
