Algarve region: tourism sector achieves new record in 22 years

The occupancy rate in the Algarve region recorded a higher percentage of 2.8 in May 2023, superior to the same month in 2019 and 5.1 % above the rate in 2022.

May was a positive month for the hospitality sector in Algarve, with an overall average occupancy rate of 72.7% in May, the highest for that month in the last 22 years.

The numbers were advanced by Algarve Hotels and Tourism Developments Association. Not since 2001 had the region registered such an occupancy rate, higher than 70%. According to the hotel evolution statistics, compared to the same month of 2019, the tourist markets that most contributed to this rise were the Irish with +2.6%, and the North American with +0.7%.

Regarding the geographical location, the largest increases occurred in the areas of Tavira (8.7 pp), Lagos, and Sagres (2.4 pp).
