The numbers of tourism activity in Portugal are surpassing records

Overnight stays in tourism increased by 18.8% in the first semester of this year, surpassing the 2019 levels for the first time.

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) also reported increases of 31.8% in total revenue and 34% in room-related revenue. Considering various types of accommodation, there were 14.5 million guests and 36.7 million overnight stays in the first six months of 2023.

In terms of regions, only the Algarve saw decreases, both in stays by residents (-3.1%) and non-residents (-0.3%). Regarding the month of June alone, tourist accommodations hosted 2.9 million guests and saw 7.4 million overnight stays, increases of 25.8% and 26.1%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2019.

These numbers align with the data released by the "World Hotel Index," which indicates that hotel bookings for the month of August increased by 23% compared to the peak of 2019. The report highlights that foreigners make 80% of bookings, more than the 77% seen last year, with visitors from Italy (77%), France (62%), and Spain (56%) leading the way.
