Between January and July 2023, the tourism sector in Porto achieved several records with a direct impact on the city's economy, as evidenced by the new historic high in consumption generated by foreign cards and the total revenue in tourist accommodation establishments.

By July, the city saw 344 million euros in transactions with foreign cards, a historic maximum with an increase of 36% compared to the same period in 2022, demonstrating the contribution of non-residents to the local economy. In July alone, consumption generated by foreign cards reached 73 million euros. Regarding the total revenue in tourist accommodation establishments in Porto, a record number of 193.6 million euros was reached in the first half of the year, representing approximately 48% of the total revenue in tourist accommodation establishments in the Northern region.

The average income per available room (RevPar) also increased between January and May, reaching an average of 62.6 euros.

According to the Tourism and Internationalization Councilor of the Porto City Council, these INE data indicate "greater economic dynamism in the tourism sector and greater attractiveness of the destination, in line with the Municipality's sustainability vision, strategically positioning itself to attract visitors with longer stays and greater purchasing power, generating a positive impact on local economic development."

The main visitor-emitting markets in Porto in the first five months of the year were Spain, the United States, France, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and Germany. It is worth noting the progressive growth of the American market, which is already one of the most significant in terms of the number of guests, overnight stays, and generated consumption.

Sá Carneiro Airport Reports Historic Passenger Numbers

Sá Carneiro Airport, the main gateway to the region, also recorded historic highs in passenger arrivals and departures in the first half of the year, with a total of 7,056,007 passengers, representing a 28.6% growth compared to the same period in 2022 (+15.7% compared to the same period in 2019). In June alone, there was an average daily arrival of approximately 23.7 thousand passengers.

In the cumulative period from January to June, Porto Airport accounted for 22.6% of the total passengers handled in the country."
