The French newspaper and digital magazine featured Casa das Lérias in its travel column as an ideal destination for your next fall getaway: What to visit in Porto? Our top 5 getaways in the north of Portugal.

By train, car, or bus, there's nothing easier than extending a weekend in Porto with a getaway in the area. From confidential Amarante to charming Viana do Castelo, here's the selection.

In Amarante: timeless charm and traditional pastries

Amarante still escapes the tourist radar. The reason: is its geographical location, halfway between bustling Porto and the hedonistic charms of the Douro. This gently sloping city, built on both banks of the River Tâmega, nevertheless lends itself to exploration at a leisurely pace. First stop, to gather some strength before exploring the city: Confeitaria da Ponte, the oldest confectionery in the city. Here you can taste the convent sweets that make Amarante famous ("Brisas do Tâmega" or "Toucinhos do Céu", among others).

The museum's next stop is dedicated to the artist Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (1887-1918), born in Amarante. Moving between different schools in the artistic effervescence of the early 20th century, he was a forerunner of modern art. And even if that means taking the key to the fields, we'll walk along the Serra de Marão for a beautiful hike. Another option is to rent bicycles for a long ride along the old railway line converted into a cycle path (Ecopista do Tâmega, 40 km), which connects Amarante to Cabeceiras de Basto. Villages, vineyards, forests and natural parks follow one another.
