Lisbon closes the Top20 of the best urban destinations of 2023

A survey by Euromonitor International ranks Lisbon as the 20th best urban destination in the world, in a study that also addresses the post-COVID recovery in international travel and over-tourism.

The Portuguese capital has been ranked as the 20th best urban destination for 2023, according to a study by Euromonitor International, which puts Paris at the top of this ranking.

The study, which uses criteria such as economic and business performance, tourism performance, tourism infrastructure, tourism policy and attractiveness, health and safety and sustainability, is dominated by European destinations, although Asia is also strongly represented. The Portuguese capital closes the list of the Top 20, ranking just after Vienna, Austria, and Los Angeles, USA, which are 18th and 19th respectively.

International travel recovers and grows by 38% in 2023

The Euromonitor International study also takes stock of international travel over the course of 2023, finding that international travel continued to recover strongly in 2023, with a 38% growth in terms of the number of trips, and is expected to reach 1.3 billion by the end of the year. Sustainable tourism remains one of the most prominent and evolving themes for global cities. Destinations are taking various measures to improve their sustainability practices," adds the head of Euromonitor International.
