On Tuesday (June 24th), the Porto City Council executive board will discuss the proposal to name the Urban Park of Lapa after Mário Soares. The park is expected to be completed by the end of July and will provide the city center with 1.7 hectares of green space.

In this proposal, the councilor for Urban Planning, Pedro Baganha, clarified that the Toponymy Commission has expressed a favorable opinion, as has the Union of Parishes of the Historic Center. In a document attached to the proposal, it is explained that an email was sent to the members of the Toponymy Commission to give their opinion, since the commission's next meeting is scheduled for July 13 and the park is expected to be completed before that date.

"This toponym was approved by a majority, with 13 votes in favor," it states. In April, The executive board approved the proposal the municipal majority presented to name the park "Dr. Mário Soares." This decision results from an agreement between the municipality and the hotel group Mercan Properties, as part of the hotel's licensing process.

When the proposal was presented, Rui Moreira told Lusa that this was a great opportunity to celebrate the 50 years of the Freedom Revolution - April 25th. The Mayor also clarified that the municipality has been in contact with Mário Soares' family and that naming the park after him is "an important gesture."
