Amadora Gains a New Hospitality Icon With the Inauguration of Moxy Alfragide Lisboa

The official inauguration of Moxy Alfragide Lisboa, on September 29, promised to make its mark on the hotel landscape of the Greater Lisbon region. The event, attended by Echo Boomer, brought together members of the Mercan Properties group, representatives from the Amadora City Council, international partners, and dozens of guests. It stood out both as a symbolic celebration of a €63 million investment and as a statement of a shared vision: to transform Alfragide and Amadora into territories of innovation, dynamism, and opportunity.
The ceremony, marked by speeches from institutional and private sector representatives, emphasized the social and economic impact of the new hotel — the first Mercan Properties project in Lisbon. Supported by 180 investors from countries as diverse as the United States, Thailand, Nigeria, and Canada, the project symbolizes international confidence in the region’s potential and reinforces the commitment to national tourism. With the creation of more than 80 direct jobs, Moxy Alfragide Lisbon represents a significant contribution to local development and strengthens Amadora’s position as a modern city open to investment.
The hotel’s design, created by the S+A architecture studio led by architect Miguel Saraiva, was widely praised by attendees. With a bold and inclusive concept, the space embraces a vibrant atmosphere, marked by unconventional details — such as check-in at the bar — and an identity tailored to young-at-heart travelers and digital nomads. Moxy thus aims to redefine the hospitality experience in Portugal, combining irreverence, comfort, and a cosmopolitan spirit that reflects the DNA of the Marriott International brand.
With 218 rooms of various types — including twin, queen, and suite rooms, as well as units adapted for guests with reduced mobility — the hotel blends functionality and design with a unique identity. Moxy Alfragide Lisboa also features an indoor heated pool, a gym, and four meeting rooms totaling 394 m², accommodating up to 500 participants. The centerpiece of the hotel is the interior garden patio, with capacity for 200 people, offering a versatile, naturally lit space suitable for corporate events, private parties, and social gatherings.
According to Vítor Ferreira, Mayor of Amadora, the new hotel “is an investment that adds value, energizes local life, and contributes to the creation of employment and wealth.” The mayor also highlighted Amadora’s strategic role as a “territory of opportunities for those who believe in its future,” reinforcing the municipality’s commitment to continue supporting private initiatives that bring development and quality of life to the city.
The hotel’s location, close to Lisbon’s center and major technological innovation hubs, was pointed out as one of the project’s key factors. The combination of urban proximity and Alfragide’s business context positions the hotel as a reference point for tourists, business travelers, and visitors seeking authentic experiences.
During the event, Daniel Flores, from Marriott, emphasized the strategic importance of strengthening and expanding the Moxy brand’s presence in Lisbon, highlighting Moxy Alfragide Lisboa’s potential to attract new audiences and integrate into the region’s tourism ecosystem. He also underlined the value of the chain’s loyalty program, with over 280 million members worldwide, as a key asset for the destination and a driver of growth for urban tourism.
Amid toasts and informal conversations, one consensus was clear among all attendees: this project is more than just a hotel investment. It is a symbol of confidence in Amadora’s future and an example of how collaboration between public and private entities can create real impact in local communities.
With this new opening, the Moxy brand now counts 15 hotels in Portugal, strengthening Marriott’s presence in the country and consolidating a decade of activity marked by modernization and innovation in the sector. Moxy Alfragide Lisboa thus emerges not only as a place to stay but as a meeting point between cultures, generations, and ideas.
